ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Learns to perform fire investigative work Learns to complete investigative and operational duties, making arrest under Kentucky Revised Statues 95.160, using full police powers as designated by the Director of Safety Learns to investigate and enforce all local ordinances and Kentucky Revised Statues pertaining to fire and the crime of arson
Examples of Duties:
UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION Learns to investigate fire incidents and other related crimes Learns to utilize the scientific method of fire investigations Learns to operate safely on the fire ground and during follow-up investigations Learns to conduct exterior and interior building surveys, examine fire debris, interpret and correlate burn patterns and reconstruct fire scenes Learns to collect, preserve and prepare evidence and other appropriate materials for presentation to the crime lab and in court Learns to interview witnesses and victims and to interrogate suspects Learns to use equipment utilized in the investigation of fires and arson related crimes as well as equipment that is used for instructional purposes Learns to document, photograph and sketch findings at a fire scene Learns to identify and deal with children who are involved in fire setting activities Learns to identify, search and secure vacant property Learns to identify the different types of building construction, related mechanical systems and their potential problems and failures Assists in making arrests and may appear in court as a witness Assists in videotaping and/or photographing incidents and incident scenes Assists in preparing written reports of investigations Learns to formulate opinions as to origin and cause of incidents based on facts gathered Responds to incidents as required Performs related work
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or the equivalent Two years of experience in investigative work OR Associate Degree in Fire Science One year of experience in investigative work OR Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Criminology, Criminalistics, Crime Scene Technology, Police Science, Law Enforcement, Psychology, Sociology and Business OR Four years of experience in fire suppression with a metropolitan fire department as defined by the International Association of Fire Chiefs OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must be a US Citizen Must be a minimum of 21 years of age Must be of good moral character, with no criminal or felony record inconsistent with the provisions of this paragraph. Unacceptable will be persons who have been convicted of a felony, or who have any criminal action pending against them An applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations Applicants who have bought or sold marijuana within three years of application, or have bought or sold any controlled substance or narcotic drug without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test Must pass a pre-employment physical, stress and medical examination Must take a pre-employment written and oral psychological evaluation Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license Successful completion of the Firefighter Recruit Training program administered by the Louisville Division of Fire Successful completion of the Law Enforcement Basic Training program administered by the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA Within the last 2 years must not have conducted the business of a private detective agency or any agency supporting private detectives, private policeman or private guards/advertised or solicited any such business in connection with any labor dispute Must never have been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude Must work a varied schedule PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work Spends prolonged periods of time sitting, standing, walking, carrying, stooping and climbing Lifts and carries items weighing in excess of 100 pounds in a team setting Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements Maneuvers in confined spaces Communicates effectively with other individuals in person, over the telephone and over a radio
