As a Protocol Specialist, you will be responsible for the planning, coordinating, and delivering of protocol support to the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), other major commands, the White House, the Cabinet, Congress and the military services. As such the Incumbent:
- Develops, coordinates, integrates, and executes all aspects of assigned protocol events hosted by the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense.
- Coordinates events with action officers of various military services.
- Formulates or recommends the establishment or revision of policies, procedures, marketing venues, or related automated programs to support internal protocol functions.
- Resolves complaints and other complex issues involving high-ranking officials.
- Advises on handling of foreign and domestic gifts, both incoming and outgoing.
- Provides technical expertise and guidance on established requirements regarding courtesies to domestic and visiting foreign dignitaries.
- Directs and advises on all aspects of protocol for military and civilian personnel as they relate to casual and formal social events.
- Develops final seating plans for special military and political-related ceremonies and special events.
- Writes narratives and read ahead, prepares seating diagrams, and oversees usher details.
- Manages and conducts quality checks of RSVPs for timeliness and overall verification prior to finalizing guest lists.
- Monitors work sent to OSD Graphics to ensure invitations, envelopes, tickets, and programs submitted for printing are received in a timely manner, are grammatically correct, and are properly formatted.
- Prepares after-action reports for historical reference detailing the challenges, lessons-learned, positive aspects, and recommendations concerning major ceremonies and special events planned or executed by OSD Protocol.
- Manages an extensive protocol reference library which includes documents and rosters pertinent to the White House staff, cabinet members, military service secretariats, and general officers.

- Using knowledge of the principles, methods, practices and techniques of protocol matters, to include national and international rules, procedures, and forms prescribing traditional formal diplomatic customs, courtesies, and etiquette for distinguished visitors to execute all aspects of assigned protocol events.
- Using analytical and evaluative methods and techniques in applying protocol knowledge to plan, coordinate, and deliver ceremonies, social functions, and receptions held in honor of visiting dignitaries and to ensure appropriateness of all elements of planned functions, considering the status and cultural and religious backgrounds of the attendees.
